The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College

PM&R physicians help patients regain body functions lost due to disease or injury. They work with other healthcare providers to provide care that meets each patient’s needs.하남재활의학과

The nexus of groundbreaking research, state-of-the-art clinical practices and high-caliber education. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine offers a unique combination of specialized expertise to improve the quality of life for people with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Residency Program

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine offers both a four-year categorical program and an advanced three-year PM&R residency. Both programs are fully ACGME accredited.

First year residents begin their training in the inpatient rehab units of SUNY Downstate, Staten Island University Hospital North Campus and JFK Medical Center as well as with local outpatient rehabilitation facilities. During these clinical rotations, the resident cares for patients with all types of physical impairments including traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury.잠실정형외과

Outpatient rotations provide extensive experience in musculoskeletal medicine, ambulatory care and electrodiagnostic testing. Residents also participate in specialty clinics in rheumatology, sports medicine and amputee rehabilitation as well as spine and musculoskeletal pain management, pediatric rehabilitation, spasticity management and wheelchair evaluations.

The program is credited with giving residents extensive hands-on experience in electrodiagnostic testing as well as Botulinum toxin injections for spasticity and steroid injections into joints, muscles and fascia. Additionally, weekly conferences in the outpatient clinics and the department seminars along with a monthly journal club help to round out the resident’s education.

Fellowship Program

Our two one-year fellowship programs allow physiatrists to gain advanced training in specific areas of physical medicine and rehabilitation. They work with renowned specialists and subspecialists to provide clinical experience treating one of the nation’s most diverse patient populations.

The Cancer Rehabilitation Fellowship provides clinical experiences with the goal of equipping trainees to restore cancer survivors at all stages of their disease to their best possible functional level. The rotation at Kessler is designed to provide a unique combination of clinical, observational and didactic experiences.

Our UPMC PM&R neurology fellowship offers an extensive and comprehensive curriculum including urology, inpatient spinal cord injury rehabilitation, consultations and acute care, pulmonary medicine and a continuity clinic. Fellows receive mentoring from faculty based on their interests and participate in national research meetings. The fellowship program also teaches a variety of procedures including alcohol nerve blocks and botulinum toxin injections using ultrasound guided techniques. A specialized clinical component includes assisting in the management of patients with baclofen pump refills and learning how to interpret pediatric EMG and nerve conduction studies.

Research

The department’s research efforts are focused on improving function and minimizing impairment related to activities that may be hampered by illness or injuries. Research areas include the causes of disability, treatments to improve or maintain function and tools for predicting outcomes in rehabilitation.

Our researchers are at the forefront of physiatric science and strive to break new ground, push boundaries and advance rehabilitation sciences so that everyone can reach their full potential in life. Our research has resulted in prestigious national awards and is published extensively.

We offer a wide range of clinical trials including musculoskeletal conditions, spine injury and cognitive rehabilitation. Patients receive care from a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, occupational and physical therapists, speech-language pathologists and rehab nurses. Our physiatrists are also dedicated to educating the community about avoiding disability and maximizing function. They serve as lecturers for the Weill Cornell Medical College Spring Seminars for Patients and their Families and as leaders of the American Austrian Foundation’s week-long medical education program in Salzburg, Austria.

Education

Our medical staff is dedicated to the education of the next generation of rehabilitation physicians and specialists. The department participates in the education of medical students and residents from Weill Cornell Medical College and other medical schools, and in the training of allied health professionals, such as occupational and physical therapists, speech therapists, nurses and social workers.

Patients with a disabling disease or injury are evaluated and treated by doctors who specialize in physical medicine and rehabilitation, called physiatrists. The doctors work closely with a team of highly trained allied health professionals, such as occupational and speech therapists, as well as nurses and psychologists.

Our physiatrists and residents are leaders in their field, lecturing and teaching at local and national meetings. They are also involved in ongoing research in the areas of disability and recovery, with many projects resulting in publications. They also contribute to the development of rehabilitation curriculum for medical school and postgraduate training programs.
